Truth #1: Perform Compound Lifts with Free Weights

 

There are so many different types of weightlifting exercises that it’s easy to get confused. Some are good for one thing while others are good for another.

For the fasted way to build muscle and gain weight, you must perform compound lifts, and with free weights, not machines.

Compound lifts, or multi-joint lifts, are weightlifting exercises that use more then one muscle group, preferably 3 or more. For any skinny hardgainer who wants a workout program for fast results, a compound exercise is the best exercise to build muscle and gain weight.

For example, the bench press is a compound lift because although the primary muscle used is the chest muscle, your shoulders and triceps are also helping to lift the weight.

Tricep pushdowns, however, are what’s called an isolation or single-joint exercise. Since this exercise just isolates a single muscle, your triceps, it doesn’t stimulate nearly as much muscle growth as a compound lift would.

Though there are many different compound lifts, you must focus only on those that stimulate the most amount of muscle and allow you to lift the heaviest amount of weight.

For years I trained using all of these “super advanced strength and muscle pumping exercises” that magazine bodybuilders said were fast ways to build muscle, only to find it had no effect on me.

I slaved away with all sort of isolation exercises and single joint lifts until finally I learned about the real exercises that have been proven for years and years to gain weight and muscle mass.

 

Truth #2: Eat More Calories and with the Right Foods

 

Though this sounds obvious, this is a simple and basic truth. You’ll hear from any fitness or health expert that in order for your body to gain weight you must consume more calories then you burn.

Before, I use to train hard at the gym but not in the kitchen. Little did I know that I was completely wasting my time working out.

On your journey to gaining weight and building muscle, a correct diet plan on how to gain weight in the form of muscle is just as important, and perhaps even more important, then lifting weights.

Not only must you consume more calories then you usually do, but with the right foods that help build muscle and in the right proportions.

When you lift weights, what you are doing is actually tearing down little muscle fibers. After, when you are resting or asleep is when the food you eat begins to repair your muscles by rebuilding them and making them stronger. Thus, resulting in bigger muscles.

Here is something you must remember:

Your muscles aren’t growing in the gym; they are growing when you are resting with the food you supply them with.

 

Truth #3: When it Comes to Working Out, Less is More

 

When I first started working out, I always logically figured the more work you put in, the more results you get in return. I trained for hours a day, sometimes six or seven days a week.

I did a bunch of different exercises for many repetitions and sets. After years of doing this, I just came to the conclusion that I just couldn’t gain weight.

That was until I learned that for hardgainers trying to gain weight and build muscle, less is more. The reason I wasn’t gaining any weight or building any muscle was because I was overtraining.

In order to learn how to gain muscle weight fast, you must keep your workouts short and intense using the proper exercises meant specifically to gain weight while allowing ample time to recover. If you overwork it, you will risk overtraining and even lose weight in the process!

 

Truth #4: Progressive Overload

 

Along with working out too much, I never use to apply the rule of progressive overload.

This is perhaps the most basic rule of weightlifting.

To build muscle properly, you must progressively overload your body with more weight then it is normally accustomed to. Then, after your muscle tissues tear down and rebuild themselves stronger, you must do it again, with more weight, or you simply will not grow.

Generally speaking, if you’re looking to build more muscle endurance, you progressively add more repetitions to your workouts.

However, if your looking to gain weight and build muscle mass, you must progressively add weight to the barbell. The fasted way to build muscle is to build strength first. In other words, if you want to get bigger you have to get stronger.

As soon as your body becomes accustomed to a certain weight, it will no longer grow. You must constantly overload it with more weight then it is used to handling.

In the past, since I was overtraining, I wasn’t able to get much stronger, which in turn was one of the reasons I wasn’t gaining any weight.

Sure, I was getting a little stronger, but I still wasn’t lifting nearly enough weight to actually stimulate some serious muscle growth.

 

Truth #5: Hard Work

 

I’m not going to be one of those guys who will try to tell you what you want to hear rather then what you should here just to try to sell you something. Like most things in life worth anything, you have to work hard for it.
